Advantages of using a naturalistic decision making approach as well as the classical decision making approach for studying decision making in dynamic 'real world' nursing and midwifery clinical environments that include urgency and complexity. Its relevance for studying decision making in nursing and midwifery practice and its ability to capture the underlying knowledge that distinguishes more experienced clinicians are discussed. 47 references.
