Do nurses use research in clinical practice?
An international study of published and grey literature on the reported use of research in clinical practice is moderate-high, remaining relatively consistent over time until the early 2000's. The review's authors comment that this maybe an overly optimistic picture. They consider the relatively unchanged self-reports of moderate-high research use by nurses is troubling given that over forty years have elapsed since the first studies in this review were conducted. More troubling is the absence of studies in which attempts are made to assess the effects of varying levels of research use on patient outcomes.
Failure to Rescue report – National Nursing Research Unit.
“Failure to rescue” refers to a failure to prevent a clinically important deterioration resulting from a complication of an underlying illness (e.g. cardiac arrest in a patient with acute myocardial infarction) or a complication of medical care (e.g. major haemorrhage after surgery). Rates of failure to rescue are widely recognized and used as patient safety indicators but have not been widely used in the NHS.
This report provides a preliminary assessment to determine if it is possible to derive valid “failure to rescue” indicators for surgical patients from Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) or similar datasets based on routinely collected hospital data in England.
